winter

it's winter
here in New Zealand

(When I see a beautiful rose early in the morning, with dewdrops on the leaves, I know that it's going to be a good day. Ponsonby, Thursday morning)

I am feeling winter, and have been for a while. The cold, winds and rain. Actually I love mist and wind. Yes, weird. But I do.

I love the mist

Decades ago I lived very rustically in an Ashram (that's what lots of people did back in the 1980s), in the Waikato. I know that there was a lot of rain and mud, but that is not what I really remember. Firmly in my memories, is the mist. So beautiful, so magical. When there is mist, time stands still for me, and I am transported into Being In The Now of something special.

there is magic in winter

And there is mist in the Waitakere Ranges. I live in it's shelter, so yes, I do live in the rain belt of Auckland. But that's okay, because I do love those mystical ranges. I climbed one of it's mountains (not as big as many other mountains!!!) a few weeks ago with some friends. In a very dark, stormy, windy, rainy night. Almost zero visibility, forked lightning, thunder and so forth. I loved it!! Lots of mist. So magical. Going up was actually hard, I had a very sore leg, and yes, I get asthma. But overall, totally worth it.

wind is special too

I love the wind. Could it be because I'm a triple air sign? I don't know. But I do love the wind, watching the leaves on the trees moving in the breeze, and when there is a little gust, leaves flying through the air. Visual poetry to me.

warm foods for winter

Vegetable soups with lentils or legumes - done in my slow cooker, I practically live on these soups in winter and autumn; roast vegetables with vegetarian sausages or tofu; "casserole" with vegetarian rissoles or tofu, and vegetables; fish and greens; porridge - I mix rolled oats and oat bran; and warm drinks

some things about winter are indeed lovely

  1. I love your positive take on Winter, despite being the season of my birth, it's my least favourite time of the year. xxx

  2. You paint a very pretty picture of winter with your words, Ratnamurti. But, I'll take summer over winter, any time! I was born in the tropics and, although I've moved away from the tropics, I still prefer the heat to the cold!

    1. My dream was to live in Bali or India during New Zealand's winter months. Didn't happen. So I decided I needed to find ways to like winter, to make it easier for myself.

  3. You would love Scotland! Years ago 2 aunties came over from NZ to visit and they hired a car and drove through Glen Coe on a gorgeous sunny day and were seriously disappointed - not because it isnt pretty (it is beautiful), but they wanted the mist and the atmosphere - so they waited until the weather nosedived and drove back through it - cue 2 very happy aunties. I have lived here 30 years and dont think I have ever seen Glen Coe without some "atmosphere" but I have come to really enjoy autumn and the warming soups and stews and home-knitting is my passion so I really suspect I was meant to end up in Scotland...

    1. Sounds like it, Juliet. I always had Scotland on my "want to go and live a while" list. I can't see it happening now. I always thought that it would be hauntingly beautiful. But some of my forebears on my Grandad's side were scottish, our family crest had a beautiful thistle.

  4. So funny to be reading about winter in New Zealand, when we are at the height of summer here in the UK! Like you, I do love winter - although in recent years we do seem to have been getting a bit too much rain and it can get a bit depressing.

Thank you for visiting my blog again, and for your kind words about my embroidery. It is coming on quite well! Also your interesting comments about diet etc. My hubby has now got the result of his cholesterol test and it's normal! They are very pleased with him.
