what is style?
I often wonder about this. Who has it, who doesn't? Do I? If not (which I suspect is the correct answer about me as regards being stylish in the fashion sense), then how do I get it? And does it even matter?
I didn't understand this at all for a long time. The quote:
"fashion fades; style is eternal": Yves St Laurent
I did not understand at all. Did it mean that we buy what's in fashion and make sure that it's something that won't go out of fashion? Do we get the fashion "essentials" which never go out of fashion and thereby make us have style? Or are we to always be fashionably stylish?
What? I ask you. What?
But now I think I might know the answer. Style is something that we all actually have, and it may or may not have to do with fashion, clothes and such. Phew.
What about: we all have a style of being. How we:
- live our life
- express ourselves on all levels
- our unique way of thinking and feeling
I'm a bit of a minimalist
My own style of expressing myself verbally, adorning moi, and having a home, is somewhat minimalist. I am a quiet wee soul. And yet, fashion-wise, weirdly, over the years I have had people copy my style of dressing completely. Which absolutely unnerves me.
I once went somewhere where a woman I knew had copied my hair do, clothes, mannerism, speech and body language. "Well, that's it" I thought - "you've killed me and taken my place." I was being silly, but gosh it was unsettling. Especially as she kept blatantly being me to the real me.
Another time I came home, and my flatmate of the time was mysteriously wearing identical clothes as to what I was usually wearing. Including the same shade of lipstick. Now, that was another spooky moment.
Of course, style does also relate to how we dress. How we adorn, embellish ourselves. There are often people who are regarded by some others as being "styley" and others are like: what? surely not? about the same person.
So it seems to be that stylish is in the eyes of the beholder.
So it seems to be that stylish is in the eyes of the beholder.
these two small Ganeshas go everywhere that I live. And yes, I know, sacrilege to have my special feathers tucked into his arm.
What is your own style? Of anything.
I have always believed that Style was how you personally did something when you are being true to yourself, and can cover everything from how you dress to what colour ballpoint pen you prefer to use.
ReplyDeleteIt must have felt rather weird having someone copy you like that, but it is sad in a way that they felt the need to do so instead of being confident enough to develop their own style and way of doing things.
Enjoy your day :) xx
I like that definition of style. And yes, it was weird, but I got over myself lol
DeleteWhat an interesting post. I have often wondered over the years just what my "style" was, and was frustrated that I didn't really have a defined style at all because my tastes are so eclectic. However, I now think that that is my style! I love ethnic stuff and tend to mix and match, and I love Boho style of dressing, and I adore lots of jewellery (I tend to jangle!) and having long hair that I often wear in 2 plaits although I'm in my late 60s and people probably think that's eccentric! My art style is pretty eclectic really - I love bright colours but I also love monochrome. I love detailed work. I probably don't have too much knowledge of colour theory although I'm working on that one - I just go instinctively with what looks right to me. One thing's for certain, as far as my style goes, I am not conventional!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting my blog, and for leaving such a kind comment! So glad you like my tiny carpets. I am making good headway on carpet #4 now and really enjoying this project. I'm glad also to have inspired to you get out the dyes again and give your old things a new lease of life! I am thrilled with how that maxi skirt came out.
Have a great week.

I love the way that artists are so expressive with their style on all levels. It fascinates me.
DeleteThat would have been unnerving to have people imitate you to the extent that they try to be you! I guess they wanted to have some of what you have - Style!
ReplyDeleteUnnerving is a mild description. It really knocked me about.
DeleteWhat a interesting post and I love the way you thought through it. I would agree that my style, or maybe my personality, is more driven to minimalism in many ways. I get overwhelmed by too much stuff and too many options. I find it messy and disorientating. Yet, I love clothing and fashion, working with classic pieces and adding trendy ones to the mix. I love that you have a few items that go everywhere with you. I'd have to pause and think about what has travelled with me along the years (although, I think it's more than just a couple of things).

Interesting, Bodana. I find too much stuff and too many options, really overwhelming, as well. I lke your style, it's really flattering
DeleteI love this post so much! I never understood that quote either and it pops up every time I search for fashion quotes. I always just ignored it because it made no sense to me. But you have explained it perfectly! I have never been able to adequately describe my own style except perhaps as a chameleon of sorts.

What about an artistic chameleon? You look artistic
DeleteMy home is somewhat minimalist but my personal style is very colourful and fun. I always wondered how is that so. I guess we can have different styles in different things. When it comes to music, I enjoy a great variety of music genres and styles. When it comes to book, I tend to prefer classical literature.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting where and how one expresses onself. You sound as though your style of life is very broad and encompassing xx
DeleteI like that quote so much and I agree - I think style is so much more than fashion and while I don't stick to one particular trend or fashion theme in my outfits I do try wear things I think are stylish! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for joining the #WeekdayWearLinkup! Hope that you had a wonderful weekend! :)

Looking at your lovely blog, you are very stylish. I like the way that you dress
ReplyDeleteThe encaustic tile and the Ganesh statue are both my style.
ReplyDeleteHaving never followed fashion, I've always loved Yves St Laurent's quote. I think fashion is following the herd, it's not a personal choice, it's a way of fitting in and being accepted by one's peers. Style is altogether more personal, it's who you are and what you believe in. Quentin Crisp once said "Fashion is what you do when you don't know who you are."
I hope the way I dress and way I furnish my home reflects the person I am. I like to think I'm successful.
You are so successful at expressing yourself, Vix. I love the way that you do xx
DeleteFascinating post, hmmm style is something I have wondered about as some people seem to have "it" but then I wonder if that really is style. I know some people who always have the latest thing and the latest fashion or the latest, it took me a while to realise that whilst they may have their finger on the pulse of current trends I dont know if that is actual style. Thinking of who I really admire or find my eyes drawn too in terms of style are the people who have divested the expectations of others trends and whims and express who they are and if their style changes, it evolves gradually in keeping with them as a person. I guess there is an immunity to external pressures to look a certain way and anything they adopt is on their terms, I also think of my daughters friends who are almost identikit in their fashion as style vaccuums - they seem too young and unconfident to really let loose and be anything other than their tribe, Im still not sure what "style" is, but I think it is the opposite of that...
