A Christmas gift for you

(Merry Christmas)

'Tis the season. Of goodwill to all. Although, sadly, this will not be the case for tens of millions of the family of humankind.

However, for most of us in Aotearoa (New Zealand), it will be a time of family and friends. And feasting. Presents. Laughter. How wonderful if life was like this for all.

Often, though, the Christmas season can be a time of incredible stress. For so many reasons. So I thought that I'd again offer a channeled (I am a medium, amongst other things) technique, combining both a breathing practice and a concentration one. So, overall, it turns into a meditation practice.

I gave this on my now deceased swamiratnamurti blog, as a Christmas gift, in 2016. It's so lovely to do, and:

  • will help with mental clarity, plus calming our ever restless mind
  • stimulates Ajna Chakra, which is going back into the head from the point that we are using
  • this is not to do with the third eye. Ajna Chakra is the mind chakra, the third eye is something else
  • makes us mentally strong
Here is the practice:
  • Sit, with palms under your armpits (not in, but under, sideways) with thumbs on the front of the torso.
  • Relax your jaw, and around the eyes (reduces tension).
  • Eyes closed.
  • Be aware of the breath flowing in and out of both nostrils, evenly. Let it have it's own rhythm.
  • Then up and down both nostrils, to and from the eyebrow centre.
  • The next step is to visualise the breath in each nostril as a thread of gold, going in and out, up and down - to and from the eyebrow centre. (This will create an inverted V shape).
  • Add the mantra of your choice (see below), if you wish to use one.
  • After a short while, remove your hands, if you wish, into any comfortable position.
  • Keep going with the golden thread and your mantra
  • Let any thoughts, any sensations, any sounds, continue in the background, keeping a relaxed focus on the technique.
  • Be the Silent Witness, the knower, the observer. Allow yourself to just be.
This simple, yet very effective, technique, is so profound.

Where is "the eyebrow centre"?
The area between the centre of the eyebrows and the very top of the bridge of the nose where there is an indentation.

Here are the mantras that you can use with this technique:
Maori:
Hi = feminine, inhalation (pronounced hee)
Ha = masculine, exhalation

Yoga:
So      = inhalation
Hum = exhalation

If you have a personal mantra:
  • If the mantra is just one word, use that word for both inhale and exhale
  • If the mantra is several words, then just use it with the breath as you have been taught. However, if you haven't learnt how to use it with the breath, just break it up: eg: om namah shivaya would become om/inhaling; namah shivaya/exhaling
If you don't have a mantra, and/or don't wish to use one, that's fine. You don't actually need one for this technique.

You can also do it lying down without the hands under the armpits, for a relaxation

Have a wonderful Christmas.
